Vega’s Story

Vega is a seasoned member of STL Mutual Aid and St Louis’s activist community, helping with food shares and more since STLMA’s infancy. Vega’s recent work has been concentrated on supporting families in need through low-cost therapy. Describing a previous mutual aid initiative that she spearheaded, Vega says:

Mutual aid shaped this. You know, starting out in Art House and seeing, especially during the pandemic, how the non-profits floundered and the grassroots organizations stepped up. And to watch how people stepped up because there was so much money. Like, one of the things we did during mutual aid at Art House is that our food share program expanded. And so we had money to finally pay volunteers. So we started off with our lowest income volunteers. And we had two people. that had been volunteers for a while that were able to secure, like, basic living and boarding now. They were able to secure housing. Because of that. And so it’s like the way that you close the loop, right?
