Gabi’s Story
We are so excited to share our conversation with, Gabi Cole, co-founder and Executive Director of the Fit & Food Connection. Gabi passionately discusses the nonprofit's mission and impact from their vibrant organic garden space in North City, St. Louis. Gabi, who started her journey while preparing for law school, was inspired to act after volunteering at a food pantry. This experience highlighted the stark need for accessible food and wellness resources in her own community on the North Side of St. Louis, leading her to establish the Fit & Food Connection.
Gabi explains that the organization, which began in 2015, is dedicated to providing holistic health solutions through physical activity and nutrition education. The Fit & Food Connection aims to combat prevalent health issues like hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes by fostering an understanding of food sources, preparation, and the benefits of physical movement. Gabi emphasizes the importance of their community garden, which not only serves as a source of fresh produce but also as a learning center where residents can engage with the earth and gain valuable agricultural skills.
Throughout the interview, Gabi speaks to the power of community and mutual aid, stressing the importance of collaboration over competition in achieving health equity. She reflects on her personal mission to build sustainable systems that empower residents to take charge of their health and environment without relying heavily on external funding. Her long-term vision includes revitalizing their neighborhood by 2030, creating a safe, healthy, and green community where residents thrive.
Gabi also shares personal anecdotes that illustrate the deep-rooted connections between generational wealth, health, and entrepreneurship. She discusses the potential of their programs to foster a sense of agency and well-being that transcends the immediate community, advocating for a collaborative approach to health and wellness that honors ancestral practices and supports future generations.
Gabi invites everyone interested in making a tangible difference to join their efforts, whether through volunteering, participating in decision-making, or supporting through donations. She highlights the ongoing need for community leaders and residents to engage directly with their initiatives to foster enduring change and health improvement in St. Louis.
